In reaction to Adair:
I'm confused by what you mean:
1. If the usplash screen is shut off in your case, and you still got a white 
screen then this is apparently not a bug of usplash.
2. If the usplash screen does not disappear when shutting it off in menu.lst, 
then I think you've got somehow a configuration error, as result of your boot 
configuration or maybe as result off historical reasons (installation over 
installation).

So I am in doubt if this is a usplash bug. I think somehow changing the
graphic mode potentially makes (or made in older versions?) the system
hang. Maybe it's not usplash itself but some graphical driver somewhere
(or the graphicscard?).

Anyway the problem should be fixed.
