I had the same problem yesterday. Upgrading to Hardy made i386 kernel
installed, but only the main part of kernel.
I installed linux-i386 (to have additionnal drivers installed) and then
sound worked.

ps: (on my desktop with dmraid disks, the generic kernel does not boot...)
