I have the same Problem with Edgy and my IXUS 65:

tail -f /var/log/messages:

Oct 7 19:31:30 localhost kernel: [17182141.336000] usb 4-4: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Oct 7 19:31:30 localhost kernel: [17182141.488000] usb 4-4: configuration #1
chosen from 1 choice

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 1241:1111 Belkin Mouse
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

if I start gnome-volume-manager-gthumb %h I get:
8020: arguments to dbus_message_new_method_call() were incorrect, assertion
"_dbus_check_is_valid_path (path)" failed in file dbus-message.c line 797.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.
libhal.c 995 : Couldn't allocate D-BUS message
error: libhal_device_get_property_type: (null): (null)

and when the window to import the fotos pops up I get this error
message:

An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'):
Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no
other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is
using the device and you have read/write access to the device
