U right,
mine is a quck & dirty. Generally we need a better solution with some 
more options regarding theme applied to WM and gnome-panel - today 
situation is  more like a very quick solution [ to choose a file than 
set as BG for Gnome Panel - it can be a transparent PNG indeed ], we 
need something integrated with "Themes Preferences", so the BG 
transparency could be set in some kind of individual mode -> shared from 
Compiz OR from Metacity - depend on your WM engine.
