I tried using the suspend/resume debug trick from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

Using the command listed there, the machine didn't complete the suspend process 
- it hung before the power light went out.  Using this command instead:
sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend
Caused the machine to suspend as usual, and lock up on resume as usual.  After 
a hard reset, dmesg's output contains the following:

[   14.611608]   Magic number: 0:731:221
[   14.611611]   hash matches 
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/base/power/main.c:76
[   14.611643]   hash matches device ttyu5
[   14.611724]   hash matches device 0000:00:19.0
