I have this problem with the Hardy beta. Changing the resolution manually in /etc/usplash.conf to the native resolution of my monitor and then running "sudo update-usplash-theme usplash-theme-ubuntu" fixed the problem for me. The correct setting was auto detected whenever I installed fresh copies of Gutsy, so I don't understand why it didn't do it for Hardy.
