I have an Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (according to lspci) and get this issue just as well. The screen turns black and nothing helps except rebooting. I am using compiz. This issue did not exist under Gutsy.
Found out that I can ctrl+alt+f1 to the terminal as soon as it turns black and then trigger a reboot using ctrl+alt+del. nothing else seems to work.
