I did some more testing this evening. This works from gnome-terminal, but not from the menu. Start FF from the terminal and it uses the proxy server defined in the Network Proxy applet, but not if run from the menu. The big difference between the two is FF run from the menu has a parent process ID of 1 (/sbin/init), while FF from the terminal has a parent process ID of gnome-terminal.
