yes i am using hardy, and yes the version installed with synaptic is 2.7-9ubuntu2. I'm going to take a guess and say that a way you could install it in gutsy is to either go compile from source or add " http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ hardy main" as a repository and just find it from there ( though it may request you install other things as dependencies.
