** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: base-installer

The latest and the greatest Ubuntu Edgy Eft installer CD (beta) does not
co-operate with Matrox Parhelia graphics adapters. Dapper installer
worked nicely on same computer (no hardware components has been changed)
  - not sure if I had to choose "safe gfx" when I installed Dapper (I just
don't remember), but it worked anyway and I was able to install Dapper.

However, back to Edgy Eft beta installer problem - It does not matter
which graphics mode I select - not even the safe mode works. How it
behaves? Well, the first initial screen displays nicely (the screen
where you can select your keyboard, gfx mode etc.) and the next one also
where you have the Ubuntu logo and progress bar. However, after that (I
suppose Gnome starts up here) the screen goes messy. Half of the screen
is blank (lower part of the screen) and the other half (upper part of
the screen) is like rasterized so that you can't really make sense what
is displayed and everything is copied 5 times - if I move the mouse I
can see 5 badly displayed mouse pointers moving.

I have uploaded a picture of this - I took this picture with my
cellphone camera, so the quality is not the best possible. This picture
is taken of the left upper corner of the screen, so you can only see
  part of the screen (ubuntuedgyinstaller.jpg):

See attachment! Photo of the problem can be found in the attachment.

I'm not sure if DRI setting in xorg.conf does this, but it might have
something to do with it. Vesa in itself works with Matrox Parhelia cards
  - it works with Dapper and many other distributions without any
  problems.

  Hardware:
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8Ghz
  Motherboard: Intel D875PBZ http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bz/index.htm
  2GB RAM
  Matrox Parhelia P650 AGP adapter
Monitor: IBM 9494-HBO T860 18" 1280X1024 Max Resolution .28 MM Dot Pitch LCD
Monitor (I was able to get to the console with ALT+F1 and was able to see that
xorg.conf had the correct model configured - it was listed in monitor section
as "T860")

  DVI display cable used.

+ EDIT:
+
+ CONFIRMED - Ubuntu Dapper Drake installer CD / Live CD works out of the
+ box while Edgy does not on this very same hardware with default display
+ settings.
+
+ Here's the xorg.conf of Dapper installer after system has been rebooted
+ with Dapper installer CD - this works:
+
+ # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

+ # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
+ # values from the debconf database.
+ #
+ # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
+ # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
+ #
+ # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
+ # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
+ # package.
