One thing I've noticed (and appreciated) recently: now both Xorg and console-setup offer a "US International (AltGr Deadkeys)" layout. This allows me to _not_ have dead keys under normal usage, and then merely press right-alt to use deadkeys and ordinary altgr-alphanumeric keys. This might be reasonable as a default. The only oddity is that the console-setup version doesn't work properly for combinations like altgr-shift-apostrophe, shift-O, for Ö; The xorg equivalent works fine.
