Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz
Fresh install of Hardy Alpha 5 landed me in a desktop with no gnome- panel; I had thought that gnome-panel was the culprit until doing an update and full-upgrade from the console tty1, rebooting, and apport reporting to me that compiz.real had previously crashed. Ctrl-Alt- Backspace to restart X prior to the full-upgrade did not fix the problem. Alt-F2 was also unresponsive; the tty consoles were all that I had available to me, although Ctrl-Alt-Del did produce the familiar GUI dialog box with the options to lock the screen, reboot, log out, shut down, etc. Installed on a Dell Optiplex GX380 $ lsb_release -dr Description: Ubuntu hardy (development branch) Release: 8.04 ~$ apt-cache policy gnome-panel gnome-panel: Installed: 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu2 Version table: *** 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status $ apt-cache policy compiz compiz: Installed: 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu2 Version table: *** 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ~$ sudo lshw -C display [sudo] password for ***: *-display:0 UNCLAIMED description: VGA compatible controller product: 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:00:02.0 version: 04 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 *-display:1 UNCLAIMED description: Display controller product: 82915G Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2.1 bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:00:02.1 version: 04 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 ~$ sudo lshw | head *** description: Space-saving Computer product: OptiPlex GX280 vendor: Dell Inc. serial: *** width: 32 bits capabilities: smbios-2.3 dmi-2.3 smp-1.4 smp configuration: administrator_password=enabled boot=normal chassis=space-saving cpus=1 power-on_password=enabled uuid=*** *-core ProblemType: Crash Architecture: i386 Date: Mon Mar 17 19:29:30 2008 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/compiz.real NonfreeKernelModules: cdrom Package: compiz-core 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu2 PackageArchitecture: i386 ProcCmdline: /usr/bin/compiz.real --ignore-desktop-hints --replace --indirect-rendering --sm-client-id default0 ccp ProcEnviron: PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash Signal: 11 SourcePackage: compiz Stacktrace: #0 0x08055a4d in ??
