Here is a version of gnome-desktop that includes a trap for the X error. gnome-settings-daemon was patched earlier to check for xrandr version 1.2.
gnome-desktop already checks for if xrandr is available, but this was not being checked before calling configuration_apply_stored(), which could result in bug 197645.
