Well here's what I think.

Check for a valid DISPLAY variable in the postinst.  If there is one, try to
query it via xrandr.  If not, then fall back to a default of 640x480.  I'm not
sure if generally DISPLAY is exposed though when running dpkg.  It might be
cleared from the environment.
