Fixed!

Sorry for flooding the list, but I think I've got a workaround for the
issue.  In ~/.fonts.conf , not only should <const>hintfull</const>
replace <const>hintmedium</const> in the "hintstyle" area, but
<const>rgb</const> should replace <const>none</const> in the "rgba"
section.  I've attached my .fonts.conf file as an example.

Note that this doesn't solve the underlying issue, that some program
isn't modifying this file like it should, but at least this points to
what needs to be done.  Can others on this list try the workaround to
see if it works for them?
