As far as hardware variants go, I am experiencing this problem on an intel 915g chipset. It does not seem to be a problem unique to specific video card. It is occurring for me in Firefox 3 Beta 4 on hardy heron on a machine that ran Firefox 2 in gutsy gibbon quite well.
