Please forgive me John but I was so frustrated with Thunderbird that I initialized my hard drive and installed the earlier version of Ubuntu - 7.04 in place of the 7.10 that seemed to have introduced the problems. You have to know that for me to do that, I would have been extremely frustrated!
I had not added any extensions other than those that would have been installed during the default installation. The problems have ceased under Ubuntu 7.04. In any even the previous Ubuntu behaves better in many ways. I realize I may have given up some enhancements by downgrading, but I couldn't take any more interuptions in my work. I was spending more time fighting with the OS and thunderbird than I was doing what I need to be doing which is programming. I woudn't close the case if there are others complaining. I didn't imagine the probems. I removed and reinstalled thunderbird several times in an attempt to resolve it. I also completely removed my .mozilla-thunderbird and .thunderbird directories. None of that helped. I wish you had contacted me before yesterday when I did this. Anyway, thanks for trying.
