unggnu, let's leave this one open. While we don't have enough info to reproduce this issue easily, we've seen a large number of (possibly related) totem bug reports, and this may provide a valuable data point.
Matt, last month I put in a patch for 965GM to fix several issues when using Compiz on 965 (the "greedy heuristic" patch), which resolved half a dozen different problems, one of which involved DVD playback under Xv. So, while that symptom differs from what you described, it's not a bad guess that the reason you stopped seeing it was due to this change. However, we're also seeing other various Totem errors with crashing X, that does sound more similar to this, so it warrants further investigation.
