This is because of a change in fontconfig, which sets hinting to medium
and anti-aliasing to greyscale. This is the default setting on the gnome
desktop in Ubuntu anyways (at least in Hardy).

[hardy] /etc/fonts/conf.d should include 10-hinting-full.conf instead of
10-hinting-medium.conf
