I don't know what has changed the last couple of days, but because I like the bugreporting I reinstalled again today.
Last time I installed (and usplash didn't work) I installed with alternate from October 1st or some time around. This time I installed from the October 3rd LiveCD, and it worked perfectly, from the start.
