Same problem here, it occured right after I exchanged my former drives to LG hardware (I have the GDR-H30N DVD-ROM and the GSA-H62N DVDRAM-Burner now). Since I didn't touch other hardware or software this must obviously be a problem with LG optical drives and (K)Ubuntu Gutsy. I could see the system freezes with massive CPU load with reaction times up to a minute for a mouse move or click.
