I didn't have this problem using firefox 2. Using network manager
shouldn't be compulsory - I'd love to remove it personally..

As this didn't happen using firefox 2 I think this is a bug in the way
firefox 3 decides whether we are online or not.  I suspect it's trying
to be helpful but failing miserably.
