The more recent release of kde4, 4.0.0.1 I think, has options to control fancy desktop effects. So far all I know is that enabling these in general causes a sig11; probably the actual X functionality in question could be determined by selectively enabling different desktop effects. I'd be more specific, but I'm running Debian with old KDE at present, as Ubuntu has too many reported, ignored and unfixed mal-scripting problems for me to deal with as present.
