I've upgraded to gutsy and the bug remained the same as described above, and 
the sameal workaround resolved the isuue in the short term.
A month ago I had an hard drive failure and then reinstalled gutsy from scratch 
(not upgrading from a previous version). With the newly installed gutsy the 
problem did not appear and g-p-m works as it is supposely to do. It was 
something introduced by the 6.10 -> 7.04 upgrade procedure that does not happen 
with fresh installs.

The bug should be closed since I'm not capable of reproducing it.
