As far as other distros go, I have been using OpenSuse from version 10.0 all the way to 10.3 now with whatever kernel they've had and I never had a shutdown problem with Opensuse, whereas Ubuntu and Kubuntu never shut down. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to test the 8.04 Alphas on my "problem computer" yet.
