I can tell you about my own system: I found the source of the problem
(purely by luck).

I noticed that nearly every report of random Ubuntu crashes on the
Interne tmade mention of the sensor settings (usually to point out that
the temperature was well within limits). So I removed lm-modules, and
since then I have seen no crashes. FWIW, the modules that sensors-detect
added were:

it87
k8temp

Since removing lm-modules and taking these modules out of /etc/modules I
have experienced 100% uptime.

So I think there was (is?) probably a fatal bug in one of those modules.
