Thanks for your bug submission.  I've seen HP printers lock up with
network transmission.  Sometimes just reseating the network cable, or
replacing the network cable helps.  From your submission, this looks
like an intermittent problem.  Since some files do print.  Using lpr
goes through a different printing channel (think of it as a backup).  If
a job hangs in CUPS, you have to manually clear it.  Normally this
happens if there is an error in data transmission that causes the job to
fail.  If it is a routine error, you will get a CUPS status message.

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

Right after a document fails to print in cups, try posting the last
lines of:

tail /var/log/cups/error_log

Sometimes the network cards built into HP printers act intermittent.
Try shutting down the printer, disconnect the power cord, reconnect,
then restart the printer.  Sometimes a failing router can cause printer
hangs.  Try changing router ports and rebooting the router.
