I have to say this should be a driver issue. Now I'm using ArchLinux and before I upgrade the Nvidia driver to 169.12, the problem exists in the same way. But when I upgraded the driver two days ago, I find everything is working well now. Cause I don't have another Ubuntu box with nvidia card, can you try to verify this in Ubuntu+Nvidia driver 169.12.
