I had the same problem too...kubuntu hardy fresh installed. I have a laptop, dell xps M1530, nvidia geforce M 8600 GT, i have used the restricted drivers and it works, but cannot change resolutions, and so on..
I tried to add the line in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and now it seemes to works.
