Additions based on the original reporters stay on #kubuntu: He tried also with a back panel usb port, and it worked ok there. Attached is his pastebinned dmesg from the time the camera was solidly attached to the front panel port. Looks like a hw power problem in that specific port to me, and not like a software bug in Kubuntu.
