I should probably say that I don't own T60, I have HP nc8430 with ATI x1600. The thing is that I put the following lines to the "Screen" section of xorg.conf:
DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Modes "1680x1050" EndSubSection Modes have to be those of your system (1440x900).
