Petr: the "right way" these days would be to use HAL and DBUS to receive notification of device additions and removals. HAL underlies functionality in GNOME and is likely to remain for a long time.
On the other hand, I think it is the responsibility of the distribution to insulate the users from the whims of the upstream developers.
