Hi Basilio, I saw your comment on b.g.o and realized what I want is to select the 'Preformat' option (which I hadn't noticed before) when I want something not to be wrapped. Now that I see how it works and understand what the difference is between the two modes (in 'Normal' mode lines are automatically wrapped), it's easy to understand why the menu item is disabled when in 'Normal' mode.
Although the fact that I'm not the first one to think the 'Wrap Lines' item is a toggle button rather than an action (which wraps lines of existing text) is probably a good indication of a UI which is not very clear.
