I cannot confirm this on a Dell C610 running Hardy Alpha 5 (and in Gutsy this also worked).
Maybe this is relevant. I used to think hibernate did not work because the keys were dead. But pressing the power button (and not holding it down as for a reboot) powered the computer on.
