You have to click on System->Administration->Printing->Policies->Stat e to become "Enabled" It sounds like Ubuntu launchpad bug 35638 The following workaround fixes this bug: Install sysfsutils and add: module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend = -1 to /etc/sysfs.conf.
