Please note. Based on a suggestion at the Ubuntu forums, I added the following to /etc/modules:
apm power_off=1 Based on that change, when I select to Turn Off the system, it now powers down completely. HOWEVER, I noticed that the "halt: unable to iterate ... " notice still shows up which means that the system is still not responding totally as it should.
