You forget the best option:
Install the binary from the download directly from nvidia.

I have been running the latest driver from nvidia without any problems
in gutsy.

The only drawback is that you cannot use apt to install it and
upgrade, but that is a much better solution than slowing your computer
down, running old, slow and buggy drivers or having no 3D support.
