Hi, I have quite the same problem with my laptop: kubuntu freezes at install; even the live CD crashes when re-launching the x server. I've encontered the same problem with many other linux distribution as fedora, mandriva, debian, opensuse 10.2 or archlinux. In my case, the problem seems to be my graphic card (VIA Chrome 9 HC IGP) which is not supported by generic linux drivers (as vesa). Even viaarena does not give linux support for that card! Many distribution can drive that graphic card (with vesa) but are unable to switch it of; so the screen blanks when trying to restart the xserver... Nevertheless, the latest version of opensuse (10.3) installed and worked succesfully (except the battery level unavaible). Is a graphic card able to create kernel panics? I have no other idea. These are the characteristics of my laptop: graphic card : VIA Chrome9 HC IGP network cards : Atheros AR5006EG wireless & VIA Rhine II fast ethernet adapter DVD: optiarc DVD RW AD-7540A HD: Samsung HM129JI Monitor : [EMAIL PROTECTED] processors : 2x Genuine intel CPU [EMAIL PROTECTED],86GHz
