Alright I am also having this problem (on edgy) and have just run into this bug report. Here is my question, what would be the harm of adding a execute permissions to any file that has read permissions for the user, group, or other (for example if a node is 400 but is really a directory make it 500?). Or at least have an option to do this... please...
