I have the same issue, however my monitor is not telling me what Kubuntu is trying to use. My card is a GeForce 6800 256MB PCI-e connected to a Dell E197FP 19" Flat Panel LCD. I posted to the Ubuntu forums and it was suggested that I attempt to use the alternate install and then install the proprietary drivers, which I can definitely do since I'm switching away from Gentoo.
