Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
Since I upgraded To Gutsy I have had nothing but problems with X. Firstly my monitor (Iiyama Vision Master Pro 455 - MM904U) was not detected correctly (it never usually is) so I had to manually enter the figures for horizontal range & vertical refresh rate using the new "System" > "Administration" > "Screens And Graphic Preferences" applet. However, unlike under previous version of X/Ubuntu this doesn't work as, no matter what I manually set, the maximum refresh rate available to me in the drop down list is 75 Hz whereas my monitors native resolution is [EMAIL PROTECTED] So... I then gave up on the "wizard" and did my usual thing which was to edit xorg.conf by hand (my existing version was replaced during the upgrade process) I therefore copied & pasted my monitor details, screen, etc. from a backup of my, previously working perfectly, xorg.conf. However unlike all other versions of Ubuntu (in which these manual entries have enabled me to get my monitor working perfectly) this still does not as the best I can get my screen to display at is 75Hz which is simply not good enough ! But worse than this since my manual intervention the following problems have also appeared. 1 When the machine initially boots to GDM the screen is briefly displayed at the wrong resolution. The Xorg server then seems to be automatically restarted as it dies and is immediately replaced by the NVidia logo (Idespite me having set this not to display in xorg.conf) The GDM screen is then displayed again but at the wrong refresh rate (50hz). 2 Upon getting to the desktop the first thing I always have to do is use the "Preferences" > "Screen Resolution" applet to change the refresh rate from 50hx to 75hz. This is extremely tedious to say the least. Which brings me to another point... 3 Why is monitor resolution in a separate applet to "Screen and Graphics preferences" ? All screen related function should be in one applet. Sadly I am therefore not that impressed with the latest version of X. I'm sure it's better "under the hood" but from my user perspective it 's simply broken. Having had many problems with X in my dealings with Linux I have developed some small degree in expertise in editing xorg.conf to my liking but this latest version of X seems to ignore what I've asked it do. So please return some sort of switch to xorg so it can be configured to stop trying to autoconfigure stuff and just do what it's damn well told in its config files. As usual the user knows best and the computer gets it wrong....
