I confirm that I have exactly this problem with Firefox (I'm not running Thunderbird) using fully-updated fresh install of Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 with SCIM and Anthy. If Firefox spawns a new window (eg "About..." or Tools > Addons then it immediately crashes and core dumps. I can't get a trace but have installed Mozilla feedback agent (which has now reported a number of times).
