Maybe because it is scanning for floppy drives? There are already bugs about that issue in launchpad, and in gnome bugzilla. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351753 It says that the problem should have been solved in their new release in libparted (which gparted uses), which is not in ubuntu at present.
