Unfortunately I was not able to find out much from Cisco pages. There seem to be various configuration alternatives behind the same series. In the end the big question is, whether it is the switch that does not allow 10M speed setting. Everything that ethtool reports is with regards to the ethernet card.. And since the test with a 10/100 switch was sucessfull I would rather see the problem with the switch. The events described sound to me like the driver tries to go for 10M speed, fails with that (because of the switch) and then resets to the last good state.
