This might be off the wall, however on one of my systems I got a BIG performance boost by setting:
System, Preferences, Apperance, Visual Effects, to None. As installed none of the choices were checked, None, Normal, or Extra. Pretty sluggish. I tried all three choices and for me, None gave the best performance.
