To use laptop-mode for my desktop machine (to spin down the harddrive) I set "ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_AC=1" in "/etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf". But I still had to "touch /var/run/laptop-mode-enabled" to actually enable laptop-mode.
