This is because of Unicode locale (issue 'locale' command in terminal to
see settings), which propably uses non-fixed fonts, so it ends up
borked. Workaround is temporary  using LANG=us_US or or other language
without Unicode binding (aka us_US.UTF-8) before mc, aka 'LANG=us_US mc'
