Public bug reported: Binary package hint: base-installer
I tried to install a 32-bit version of hardy server alpha-2 on a 64-bit machine containing an AMD Quad-Core Opteron processor and near the end of the "Install the base system" step, this message appeared on the console: "No installable kernel was found in the defined APT sources." On the Alt-F4 virtual console these messages were seen: base-installer: info: kernel linux-generic not usable on 486 base-installer: info: kernel linux-server not usable on 486 base-installer: info: kernel linux-image-generic not usable on 486 base-installer: info: kernel linux-image-server not usable on 486 base-installer: info: kernel linux-image-2.6.24-2-server not usable on 486 base-installer: info: kernel linux-image-2.6.24-2-generic not usable on 486 base-installer: warning: Kernel override 'linux-server' not present base-installer: info: Found kernels '' I was able to switch to an alternate console, chroot into /target and manually install a kernel from the CD, so this isn't caused by the media spindown issues that I found while searching for existing bug reports. After this workaround, the rest of the installation completed without problems. Processor specifics: family 16, model 2, model name "Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 8347" The problem doesn't occur on 64-bit Intel processors, nor on a Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor (family 15, model 33, model name "Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 270"). It also doesn't occur with 64-bit installation media, only 32-bit. I was able to reproduce the same issue during a gutsy i386 server install and a hardy server alpha-3 install. I believe I have traced the problem to the arch_get_kernel_flavour() routine in the file kernel/i386.sh of the base-installer package. ** Affects: base-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- 32-bit install on 64-bit AMD processor fails to find installable kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187869 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
