I can reproduce this bug. I think the problem could be solved by letting firefox and/or pidgin packages depend on libpurple-bin.
An even better solution would be integrating libpurple-bin in the ubufox plugin finder. The first time a user clicks on an IRC link the package gets installed automatically, then the feature is available.
