Some more information ... The jabber domain I was using was chat.corp.domain.com. It was suggested that I try tools.domain.com. This worked. chat.corp.domain.com is a CNAME for tools.domain.com. Perhaps the problem is that libsasl won't accept a certificate that is for the actual hostname when you are connecting to a CNAME for that hostname?
